Before you proceed with finding a solution to your issue, double check:

  1. Your target machine has a 64-bit version of Windows OS installed. 32-bit version is not supported!

  2. Make sure your computer meets the system requirements.

RPA Express Installation

The section describes how you can solve issues that may occur during RPA Express installation.

Error code 0x80070661

Symptoms

Installation failed with error code 0x80070661.

Resolution

  1. Your target machine has 32-bit operating system installed.
  2. Check that you have 64-bit operating system (32-bit is not supported).

Error code 0x80070643

Symptoms

Installation failed with error code 0x80070643.

Resolution

  1. Some of .msi files can be moved to quarantine by anti-virus or anti-malware software.
  2. Disable your anti-virus or anti-malware software temporarily, restore file and then run RPAExpressInstaller.exe once again.
  3. If this doesn't help, collect and zip installation log files as described here and send them to rpaexpress@workfusion.com with a short description of your issue.
Error code 0x80070570

Symptoms

Installation failed with error code 0x80070570.

Resolution

  1. Make sure that you have completely extracted the content of the installation archive (RPAExpressInstaller.zip) on your local drive.
  2. Disable your anti-virus or anti-malware software.
  3. If this doesn't help, collect and zip installation log files as described here and send them to rpaexpress@workfusion.com with a short description of your issue.
Update admin user in PostgreSQL database was failed

Symtomps

The following window is showing during installation:

Resolution

  1. Check whether your system meets the System Requirements.
  2. If it does, check with your local IT team whether port 15423 is blocked. In case it is blocked, ask to unblock it, and run the installation once again.
  3. If the port is not blocked and installation still fails with the same error, collect and zip installation log files as described here and send them to rpaexpress@workfusion.com with a short description of your issue.

RPA Express launch

The section describes how you can solve issues that may occur during the launch of RPA Express.

RPA Express shortcut doesn't start: Pop-up window is showing

Symptoms

After clicking on RPA Express shortcut the following window is shown:


Resolution 1

  1. Right-click on RPA Express shortcut on your desktop.
  2. Press Change and find application file wscript.exe in C:\Windows\System32 on your PC (see the screen below):
  3. Select this file, click Apply and close shortcut properties.
  4. Run RPA Express.

Resolution 2 (if Microsoft Windows Based Script Host is removed from PC)

  1. Open folder C:\RPAExpress\RPA\wfagent.
  2. Create a file with the name express.bat and add content as below:
    START /B ..\..\Applications\Java\bin\javaw -Dagent.showIntro=true -Dloader.path=lib -Dhttp.nonProxyHosts="localhost|127.0.0.1" -Djava.awt.headless=false  -Dagent.desktopType=RPA_EXPRESS -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 -Xmx500m -jar status-agent.jar --spring.config.location=./express.yml
  3. Open shortcut properties and change attributes as shown below:
  4. Launch RPA Express
RPA Express shortcut doesn't start: Windows Script Host access is disabled

Symptoms

After clicking on RPA Express shortcut the following window is shown:



Resolution

If you don't have permissions to change registry please contact your IT department.

  1. Type regedit in Run box and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings
  3. On the right panel, you will see Enabled. If you see the entry 0, the Windows Script Host access is disabled on your Windows machine. Double click on it and set Value Data to 1 to enable it.

    1. A value of 1 will enable Windows Script Host
    2. A value of 0 will disable Windows Script Host.
  4. Click OK and exit the Registry. 

If you don’t see this entry, go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings and repeat steps above.

Platform Monitor page is unreachable

Symptoms

  1. Connection to Platform Monitor via localhost cannot be established:

Resolution

Your computer is connected to the network via a proxy-server, and the connection is managed by network administrators.

    1. Go to Control Panel → Internet Options and click LAN settings
    2. Check, if there is a proxy specified in Automatic configuration (it can not be changed).
    3. Contact your network administrator and request to add the following resources to exceptions:
      • localhost
      • 127.0.0.1
Control Tower failed to start

Symptoms

Control Tower cannot start and your PC meets the System Requirements.

Resolution

  1. Cause - "Not enough storage is available to process this command"
    1. Solution: Edit registry.
    2. Disable Microsoft Security Essentials (if installed).
  2. Check that all ports used by RPA Express are open:

    15100 - Platform Monitor
    15110 - S3 File Storage (Minio)
    15280 - Nginx
    15380 - Tomcat
    15306 - Mysql
    15423 - Postgres
    15444 - RPA Grid (Bot Manager)
    15410 - 15415 - RPA Node
  3. Check that UAC  (User Account Control) is set to either on of the following options:
    1. Never notify
    2. Notify me only when programs/apps try to make changes to my computer
  4. Check Firewall inbound rules (Firewall → Advanced settings). It should be enabled for:
    1. RPAExpress Java
    2. RPAExpress Minio
    3. RPAExpress MySQL
    4. RPAExpress Nginx
    5. RPAExpress Postgres
Control Tower cannot be started from the tray menu

Symptoms

You have tried to start Control Tower from tray menu, but the status is "Not started" after several tries:

Resolution

  1. Check whether your PC meets the System Requirements. Note that Control Tower takes a lot of RAM, so you may need to close other active applications while Control Tower is starting.
  2. If your machine meets the system requirements, but Control Tower still hasn't started, try starting it using Platform Monitor.
    1. Open Platform Monitor from the tray menu.
    2. Go to System Processes and check components: 
      1. mysqld
      2. postgress
      3. tomcat
    3. They should have status "stopped" as on the screenshot below:
    4. Press Actions -> Start for each of these components:
    5. Click OK in the window below and wait till the status of the components changes to "running". 

Note. It can take up to 10-15 minutes, depending on the machine's properties, to start Control Tower

After that you can log into Control Tower by opening this link in your browser: http://localhost:15280/workfusion/login

Working with RPA Express

The section describes how you can solve issues, that may occur while working with RPA Express.


Bot Manager cannot be started

Symptoms

Bot Manager is stopped and cannot be started from the tray menu while your machine is not connected to the network either by Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

Resolution

  1. It is necessary to enable a Network interface.

    Important note

    It does not mean you should have access to Internet.

  2. Exit RPA Express.
  3. Install Microsoft Loopback Adapter as described on Microsoft TechNet web-site or follow the instruction below (for Windows 10):
    1. Open Properties from My Computer:
    2. Open Device Manager:
    3. Open Action and select Add legacy hardware:
    4. Click Next in Add Hardware Wizard:
    5. Choose Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced) and click Next:
    6. Select Network adapters in the hardware types and click Next:
    7. In the Select the device driver dialog choose:
      1. Manufacturer – Microsoft
      2. Model – Microsoft KM-TEST Loopback Adapter

      and click Next:
    8. Click Next to install:
    9. Wait until the installation ends and click Finish to complete:
    10. Open Device Manager to make sure, that the Lookback Adapter is installed and enabled:
  4. Wait until the connection is established.
  5. Open Command Prompt and use ipconfig to check the status of all network interfaces. Make sure, the Loopback Adapter has got the ip-addresses:

  6. Start RPA Express.
  7. Check Bot Manager status in the tray menu:

No samples of business processes in Control Tower

Symptoms

You see empty Business Processes list in Control Tower, though there should be samples with business processes.

Resolution

1) Run your Control Tower if it is not stared and open it.

2) Go to Business Processes list and click on button near "Create New" and press "Import package":

3) Press "Add" in order to upload files:

4) Find in the dialog window C:\Users\<user_name>\ControlTower\Samples. You should see several zip-archives and csv-files:

5) Choose one of archives and press "Open". You should see the following:

6) Press "Preview Package", wait a bit while "Import package" button becomes available and press it. 

7) After that you can see sample business process in the list. 

Unable to open recording

Symptoms

While opening a recording created with a older version of RPA Express, migration fails with the following error.

When you click OK, Recorder cannot open the recording.

Resolution

Your recording is created with an older version of RPA Express and cannot migrate automatically due to changes in the actionmodel.

  1. Close the tab that shows the error and close Studio.
  2. Go to your workspace folder (by default C:\Users\%username%\workfusion-workspace\rpae_project).
  3. Find the .rpae file which you want to run.
  4. Open it with any text editor, e.g., Notepad.
  5. Find the string in the XML header which contains a wrong version number (see example below).

    xmlns:recorder="http://www.workfusion.com/recorder/v1.0.0"
  6. Change the namespace manually to the version of RPA Express currently installed on your machine (for example, 2.1.4)

    xmlns:recorder="http://www.workfusion.com/recorder/v2.1.4"
  7. Save your changes and close the text editor.
  8. Start Studio and open the recording.
  9. Repeat the procedure for all recordings created with an older RPA Express version, which fail to migrate automatically.
Model does not contain namespace URL

Symptoms

When you launch a recording, you get this error, as Recorder does not support migration from later to earlier versions.

Resolution

You should open your recording with any text editor and manually change the version of RPA Express to the one installed on your machine. Follow the steps to launch your recording.

Error executing WebElementAction

Symptoms

Error executing TemplateAction

...

Caused by: org.openqa.selenium.WebDriverException: unknown error: call function result missing 'value'

Resolution

If your RPA scripts stopped working after browser update, you need to do the following steps.

Chrome Driver

  1. Download the latest driver from https://sites.google.com/a/chromium.org/chromedriver/downloads
  2. Replace the old driver in RPA\rpa-grid\drivers\windows\x32

Firefox Driver

  1. Download the latest drivers(both x32 and x64) from https://github.com/mozilla/geckodriver/releases
  2. Replace old drivers in the following directories:
    1. geckodriver-vx-win32.zip → in RPA\rpa-grid\drivers\windows\x32
    2. geckodriver-vx-win64.zip → in RPA\rpa-grid\drivers\windows\x64
Recording is not playing: Unable to connect with Robot

Symptoms

You click Play recording, but the "Unable to connect with Robot" message emerges.

Resolution 1

Check Bot Manager status. Perhaps, it is not started.

  1. To start Bot manager, open RPA Express tray menu and click Start in the Bot Manager section.
  2. If it does not help, choose All Components > Restart

Resolution 2

If the status of Bot Manager is 'Started' in the Tray menu:

  1. Click Details>> on the window with the error message.
  2. If the error text contains: Caused by: org.openqa.selenium.WebDriverException: Unable to parse remote response: <!DOCTYPE html>, open Server Profile (Window - Preferences - WorkFusion Studio - Server Profiles)
  3. Check the value of Bot Relay URL
  4. The URL should be: http://localhost:15444/wd/hub
  5. If it is wrong or missing, edit/insert it manually.
  6. Click Apply, then OK.
  7. If this URL is correct, but you still get the same exception, please refer to your local IT team in order to provide access to the URL.
Recording is not playing: java.net.MalformedURLException: no protocol

Symptoms

You click Play recording, but it failed with the exception:

Resolution

  1. Open Window → Preferences: Workfusion Studio - Server Profiles, or click Server Profile:Default → Manage Profiles at the bottom right corner of WF Studio.
  2. Check whether Default profile settings are populated according to the following guide: Preferences
  3. If not, populate all necessary fields, then press Apply and save settings.
Recording is not playing: Cannot find active server profile

Symptoms

You click Play recording, but it fails with the following exception:

Resolution

  1. Open Window → Preferences: Workfusion Studio - Server Profiles, or click Server Profile:Default → Manage Profiles at the bottom right corner of WF Studio.


  2. If you see the error "Cannot find active server profile" in Server Profile (see below), you need to delete folder C:\Users\%USER_NAME%\.eclipse and check whether Server Profile has been found and is not empty.
  3. If the Server Profile is empty, populate the field as described in this guide: Preferences

    Note

    Do the next steps only in case of folder C:\Users\%USER_NAME%\.eclipse is absent. If you have it and can remove, see steps 1-3 above.

  4. In case the folder C:\Users\%USER_NAME%\.eclipse is absent and/or Server Profile is not saved even after manual tries:
    1. open Window → Preferences and find tab General - Security - Secure Storage:
    2. un-check option "Windows Integrated (64 bit)", press Apply and then OK. Do not click "Change Password" button.
    3. Enter your own password and hints for recovering password as shown below:

    4. restart RPA Express and launch WorkFusion Studio.
    5. you should see a password window. Enter password which you set previously, go to Studio and check whether Default server profile is filled in.
Recording is not playing: Unable to read file

Symptoms

You click Play recording, but "Unable to read file" message appears.

Resolution

Check that the details in all actions are filled in completely and there are no empty drop-downs, paths to files/folders or conditions.

You can see which element is missing in the error log by clicking Details>> button.

Recording is not playing: Cannot find active server profile

Symptoms

You click Play recording, but it fails with the following exception:

Resolution

  1. Open Window → Preferences: Workfusion Studio - Server Profiles, or click Server Profile:Default → Manage Profiles at the bottom right corner of WF Studio.


  2. If you see the error "Cannot find active server profile" in Server Profile (see below), you need to delete folder C:\Users\%USER_NAME%\.eclipse and check whether Server Profile has been found and is not empty.
  3. If the Server Profile is empty, populate the field as described in this guide: Preferences

    Note

Recording is playing in RPA Recorder but not in Control Tower

Symptoms

You play the recording in WorkFusion Studio and it runs without errors. But after publishing the recording to Control Tower it is not playing.

Resolution

If you use path to files in your actions (Enter Keystrokes, Launch Application), make sure that all backslashes are doubled, for example:

C:\\Program Files\\Your Super Software\\Installer.msi
Recorder gets too slow

Symptoms

WorkFusion Studio is working extremely slowly.

Resolution

The maximum memory allocation pool for Java Virtual Machine (JVM) has been exceeded by Studio.

  1. Make sure that Studio is closed.
  2. Go to Studio folder (by default C:\RPAExpress\Studio\).
  3. Find and open Studio configuration file (workfusion-studio.ini).
  4. Find the Xmx property. Default value is 1024m that equals to 1024 MB of memory.
  5. Change the value of the flag to 2048m to double the size of the memory pool.
  6. Save and close the configuration file.
  7. Start Studio.
Cannot publish a recording to SPA Control Tower

Symptoms

You are getting an error while trying to publish a recording to SPA: "Control Tower has responded with error."

Resolution

Check the following:

  1. Verify that your SPA Control Tower is up and running
  2. Check Studio properties in %install_dir%/Studio/configuration/config.ini file. Example:
    1. com.workfusion.studio.recorder.wf.host=http\://wfapp.somedomain.com

    2. com.workfusion.studio.recorder.wf.port=8080

    3. com.workfusion.studio.recorder.wf.username=someUsername

    4. com.workfusion.studio.recorder.wf.password=somePassword

  3. Check that "recorder-images" bucket exists on S3, which is connected to SPA
RPA Express does not respond

Symptoms

RPA Express has got non-responsive and stays so for a long time.

Resolution

You should end all RPA Express processes manually.

For that purpose we recommend to use Process Explorer (Windows Sysinternals tool), as the standard Windows Task Manager is not convenient to handle multiple processes.

  1. Go to Process Explorer page. There you can find a description of the tool and the download link.
  2. Download Process Explorer and unpack it to a local folder on your computer.
  3. Start Process Explorer (procexp.exe or procexp64.exe) and accept EULA. Process Explorer opens.
  4. Find the following tasks:
    1. java.exe with multiple sub-tasks;

    2. cmd.exe with sub-tasks postgres.exe.

  5. Select the task, right click and choose "Kill Process Tree" in the context menu.

  6. Do the same for the second task.

How to Send Logs

Hint

RPA Express logs contain information about events and messages produced by RPA Express components, and a short list of the system properties, such as OS version, CPU type and RAM size.

No sensitive information is collected and included.

It's safe to send them out to WorkFusion by any means (e-mail or via forum as a private message or an attachment to your post).


Installation logs

If installation failed and you see any exception after it, and your PC meets RPA Express System Requirements, do the following steps:

  1. Go to C:\Users\%user_name%\AppData\Local\Temp folder.
  2. Find all files that start with "WorkFusion_RPA_Express_" and have .log extension.
    For example: 
    WorkFusion_RPA_Express_20180505113212.log
    WorkFusion_RPA_Express_20180907113252_001_WorkFusionControlTower.log
  3. Create a ZIP archive with these files.
  4. Post this archive and description of your issues to WorkFusion Forum or send email to rpaexpress@workfusion.com.
RPA Express Component logs

If one of RPA Express components is not working properly after a successful installation, and your PC meets System Requirements, complete the following steps:

  1. Open Platform Monitor > Command Board (from tray or type http://localhost:15100/commands in browser address line)
  2. Click the Execute button opposite to the required command (command which starts a failed/unavailable component).
  3. Copy response text and send it to WorkFusion Forum
WorkFusion Studio logs
  1. Go to %install_dir%\Studio\logs (default is C:\RPAExpress\Studio\logs)
  2. Create a ZIP archive of contents of the folder.
  3. Post this archive and description of your issues to WorkFusion Forum or send email to rpaexpress@workfusion.com.
Control Tower logs

If you experience some issues, you can send us a report by click the Send report link.

This action will generate a detailed report and open your default email client with system info:

All you need for sending the report is to:

  1. Go to the folder in the RPA Express installation folder: C:\RPAExpress\Workfusion\
  2. Attach the report.zip file to the email.
  3. Send the email to rpaexpress@workfusion.com.
Control Tower logs (Tray menu is not available)

If you experience some issues with starting WF Agent (Tray menu).

  1. Go to %install_dir%\RPA\wfagent (by default is C:\RPAExpress\RPA\wfagent)
  2. Right click on rpae-report.ps1 → Run with PowerShell

This action will generate a detailed report and open your default email client with system info:

All you need for sending the report is to:

  1. Go to WorkFusion's folder in the RPA Express installation folder (by default is C:\RPAExpress\Workfusion\)
  2. Attach the report.zip file to the email.
  3. Send the email to rpaexpress@workfusion.com.
